Meaning Vitamin B, (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin is a water soluble vitamin and is stable in heat, air and acid. It gets destroyed in ultraviolet rays of sun and light. It is stored in the body in very small amount, so its intake in daily diet is essential.

Functions of vitamin B2

Functions of vitamin B2 are similar to that of vitamin B1.

(a) Helps in energy metabolism

Vitamin B act as co-enzyme in energy metabolism. So helpful in providing energy to the body d face

(b) For growth of the body

Vitamin B2 is essential for physical growth. It is required for activity and well being of youth.

(c) Helps in respiration of cells

Vitamin B2 is an essential part of all iving cells and it helps in respiration of cells.

Effects of deficiency of vitamin B2

The deficiency of vitamin B2 can be caused due to the deficiency of vitamin in diet, malabsorption in the body or destruction in the cooking process. Its deficiency causes Ariboflavinosis. Its symptoms are:

(a) Effect on eyes

Deficiency of vitamin B2 causes irritation and burning, sensation, itching and swelling of the eyes. Blood capillaries surround the cornea causing dim vision in a person.

(b) Effect on skin

1. Skin turns red and then black because of irnitation.

2. Mucous membrane of lips and mouth breaks up and cracks appear, lips become
Red. This condition is known as cheilosis.

4. The tongue becomes purplish red,smooth and shiny in appearance This is known as    Glossitis. In this condition, eating food is painful.

(c) Improper metabolism of energy causes loss of appetite.

Sources of vitamin B2

Yeast, liver, milk and milk products are rich sources of vitamin B2. Apart from these green leafy vegetables, egg, bran, layer of cereals, sprouted cereals, pulses, peas, beans etc are other sources of vitamin B.
